Job Description

Job Purpose
The Senior Curator provides curatorial leadership in developing exhibitions and interpretive content that reflect Grenada’s cultural identity. This role drives the selection, research, and contextualization of artifacts and collaborates across divisions to deliver
exhibitions and programs that are inclusive, engaging, and academically grounded.

Relationships and Reporting
• Provides curatorial leadership and scholarly interpretation at the Grenada National
• Museum in matters related to exhibition development, artifact research, and public engagement.
• Reports directly to the Head, Curation and Collections.
• Supervises the Junior Curator.
• Works closely with Research Officer, Collections Officer, and Communications team to integrate scholarship, design, and public interpretation.
• Liaises with academic institutions, cultural partners, and community stakeholders.

Duties and Responsibilities
• Researches and develops thematic exhibition proposals.
• Selects artifacts and prepares exhibition narratives and labels.
• Supports the Head of Curation in implementing exhibition schedules.
• Coordinates with design and conservation staff for exhibition layout and preservation needs.
• Contributes to the development of inclusive exhibitions that reflect diverse narratives and engage a broad public audience.
• Integrates sustainable exhibition practices, including environmentally responsible materials and methods.
• Coordinates closely with the Research Officer to integrate scholarship into exhibition content.
• Contributes to scholarly articles, publications, and public talks.
• Collaborates with academic, cultural, and community partners.
• Assists with public programming and special events tied to exhibitions.
• Participates in mentorship and professional development activities as outlined by the Head of Curation.
• Participates in emergency preparedness planning related to collections and exhibitions.
• Supports digital initiatives, including virtual exhibitions or digital interpretation content.
• Performs any other duties related to the role as required.

Education and Experience
• History (Caribbean, colonial, or social history focus), Art History (including Caribbean and Indigenous art), Anthropology (cultural, social, or archaeology tracks), Museum Studies / Museology, Heritage Studies / Cultural Heritage Management, Archaeology, Sociology, Cultural Studies, Liberal Arts / Interdisciplinary Humanities (with relevant curatorial experience), or a related field.
• At least three (3) years of experience in curatorial or exhibition development roles.
• Postgraduate qualifications (e.g., MA in Museum Studies, Heritage Management, or Art History) are desirable.
• Experience in developing and managing exhibitions, public programming, and scholarly projects.
• Proven track record in collaborative curatorial projects or interdisciplinary museum initiatives.

• Political Science (focus on cultural policy, postcolonial studies)
• Education (Museum Education or Public History focus)
• Archival Studies / Information Studies (for digital/collections literacy)
• Conservation Studies (material culture, art conservation)
• Caribbean Studies / Latin American Studies
• Communication / Media Studies (for interpretive content, digital exhibitions)
• Digital Humanities (data-driven research, virtual exhibits)

Knowledge and Skills
• Strong research, analytical, and writing skills.
• Knowledge of exhibition planning, heritage interpretation, and audience engagement.
• Understanding of conservation principles and artifact preservation.
• Ability to collaborate effectively across teams and with external partners.
• Cultural sensitivity and awareness of inclusive storytelling in a post-colonial context.
• Familiarity with digital interpretation tools, exhibition software, and multimedia integration.
• Commitment to ethical practices and inclusive curation.
• Understanding of basic emergency protocols for heritage collections.
• Experience mentoring junior curatorial staff or interns.

Compensation
Salary will be determined based on qualifications and experience. As a guide, this role aligns with a senior-level Grade P1, corresponding to Grade J on the national pay scale in Grenada.
